Joy Anyim
The chairman of the Onigbongbo Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Babatunde Oke, has come to the rescue of corps members whose allowances were underpaid  by the  Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Oke who was informed of the corp members protesting in the morning had visited the collation Centre at the Ikeja Grammar School in the afternoon to pay the corp members.
Although the number of corps member paid could not be ascertained as at the time of filing this report, it was gathered that the had a shortfall of N3,000 each.
According to Oke, the corps members have a right to protest because they have worked and deserves to be paid.
He said,  “As far as I am concerned, they were asking for their rights. How can they work without pay? They were not paid for the first election and today instead of paying them fully, they were paying N7,000.
“ That was the disagreement they had in the morning. So, I now told them I wanted to visit all the four wards within my territory and whatever we agree with other wards will apply here. We agreed for N10,000 and so, the shortfall with this place is N3,000.That was what I brought and they were happy. “
On his opinion of the elections in his LCDA,  Oke said, although elections did not start early in some polling units, it was however concluded in good time.
“ The election was peaceful and it lasted about five hours. Voter apathy was obvious and I think it will be there for a long time.
“ It is only God that can answer the reason for the apathy but you know our people here. After the first election, the other party felt theor man did not win and so, they did not mobilise. What you saw today was mobilised by the APC.
“ The other parties did not do anything.
Gradually, things will continue to change. A lot of our youths are now going into politics. But they should go gently and not rush after money. It is a business that takes time before it yields result. “
What is expectation are regarding the outcome of the election,  he said,  “ The APC has won already. Yes, the result is not out yet but the sample I have been seeing from polling units show we have won.
“ Whatever happens in Ikeja shows a reflection of what is obtainable in the state because Ikeja is the capital. You will only observe minor differences.
“Since election is peaceful here, I am confident it is peaceful in two-thirds of the local government of the state.
Elections will continue to be peaceful in Lagos because we are more intelligent and sincere here.”
