CORONAVIRUS : Benue muslims, christians gather in large number despite order

By Godwin Akor, Makurdi

Despite the order that there should be no large social or religious gathering, the Muslim and Christian  faithful on Friday  in large numbers gathered at mosques and churches in Makurdi to pray for God’s intervention in the spread of Coronavirus in Benue and Nigeria at large.

It was gathered at the prayer venues that even as sanitizers were provided for the the  faithful to wash their hands before prayer, the directive of spacing could not be obeyed as the worshippers, in their usual practice stayed together in close proximity  to pray.

Our correspondent gathered that at some churches in Makurdi where the order was violated that the faithful observed the Stations of the Cross which holds every Friday with the Christian faithful moving together outside the churches.

The issue of gathering in large numbers at worship centers may be one of the issues the Engr Abounu committee on Coronavirus has to resolve before next Sunday as some churches may prefer to gather in large numbers to worship God.

It was observed on Friday that the general problem of compliance with government direçtives may be a major problem because people coming into Benue with likely cases of COVID 19 are not being checked as private and commercial vehicles move in droves into the state capital and the various local government areas.
