Controversy trails alleged recovery of N1.94m by EFCC in Kaduna hotel

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had debunked reports that it arrested some people and recovered N194 million of new Naira notes and Monipoint POS machines with a cumulative balance of N300 million during a raid of the White De Castle Hotel located at No 9 Kwato Road Unguwar Rimi GRA, Kaduna.

The EFCC rebuttal came after is is PDP Vanguard reported that operatives of the anti-graft agency raided the Hotel and made away with Ghana-Must-go loaded with millions of Naira meant for vote.

“Breaking: EFCC has raided a hotel called White Castle in Nasir el-Rufai’s Kaduna and seized hundreds of millions of cash in new Naira notes. Good job EFFC (sic),” a the Vanguard tweet read.

However, a counter narrative suspected to emanate to the APC, dismissed the claim.

The WhatsApp message said that whereas it was true that the EFCC operatives searched White Castle Hotel, they did not find money neither did they arrest anybody.

“Yes, it’s true that the EFCC searched White Castle Hotel. But they only saw Ghana Must go bags with wrappers. They found no money and arrested nobody. If they did they should post the pictures like they have posted of all the people moving money,” the unsigned message said.

Meanwhile, a former lawmaker and activist, Shehu Sani, has reportedly expressed his concern over the incident, via his official twitter handle and challenged the EFCC to make public the report of their raid known, warning that there should be no cover up, Opera News reports.

The incident occurred on the same day as the general election in Nigeria was taking place.

He noted it was the first time that the EFCC had made a high-profile recovery of funds during an election period, as it had uncovered large sums of money allegedly meant to be used to buy votes or influence the outcome of the elections previously.

The ongoing presidential and National Assembly election has witnessed diverse incidents, ranging from violence, late arrival of INEC staff, vote-buying, etc. However, the enthusiastic turnout of voters clearly showed the determinant of Nigerians to elect a new crop of leaders for the next four years.
