Coca-Cola Foundation, Africa Clean-Up Initiative embark on proper waste disposal sensitisation

Coca-Cola Foundation and Africa Clean-Up Initiative, has sensitised market women and men on the need for proper waste disposal so as to prevent indiscriminate dumping of waste across the state.

While embarking on sensitisation programme at Ilupeju, Odi Olowo and Ojuwoye markets in Lagos metropolis,  together with other partners such Wevo, Inspired Next, Inside Out With Agatha, LAWMA urged traders to ensure their environments are clean by disposing their wastes properly.

The groups, who were made of about 85 volunteers went into different parts of Ilupeju to campaign against dumping of refuse in the gutters.

Chief Executive Officer of African Cleanup Initiative, Mr. Alex Akhigbe, said that the project was meant to sensitise the populace at the motor parks, at Town Planning Way, Oshodi Under Bridge, Anthony and Ilupeju on the importance of proper waste disposal and also clean up 13 locations along Ilupeju, Oshodi area.

He mentioned that ACI has carried out lots of advocacy and cleanup activities because the organisation is passionate about environmental sustainability, adding the  objective of the cleanup was to advocate and sensitise residents to the importance of keeping their environment clean.

He urged residents to take responsibility, clean their immediate environment and ensure that drainages are not blocked again.

He commended the efforts of the Lagos State government and the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) for providing the waste and recycling bags,  also the Odi-Olowo/Ojuwoye LCDA for making their truck available for evacuation of the recovered wastes and Wecyclers for the Collection of the Recyclables recovered.

Mrs. Agatha Amata,  Founder Inside Out with Agatha (IOWA), said that the organisation was in collaboration with ACI to change the attitude of residents toward dumping refuse in canals.

Also, Project Manager of Inspired Next Initiative, Mr. Charles Anthony, expressed delight at partnering with ACI on the project aimed at sensitizing the general public on the importance of environmental cleanliness.

Miss Rasheedat, a volunteer who participated in the cleanup exercise said the “community is ours and ours to protect”  and promised to encouraged youths to come together and ensure their environments are kept clean.
