CAN, FG disagree over killings in Southern Kaduna

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and the Federal Government have disagreed over the incessant attacks and killings in Southern Kaduna State.

The Christian body cautioned the Federal Government against twisting facts on the actual happening in the troubled Southern Kaduna, saying the government was not doing enough to protect the lives of the citizens as well as end the killings as claimed.

CAN chairman in Kaduna State, Rev. Joseph Hayab, while reacting to claims credited to the Senior Special Assistant (Media & Publicity) to the President, Malam Garba Shehu said that “the problem in Southern Kaduna is an evil combination of politically-motivated banditry, revenge killings and mutual violence by criminal gangs acting on ethnic and religious grounds.”

He said instead of the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration to find a lasting solution, it resorted to twisting facts.

“CAN, Kaduna State Chapter, as a body, finds the statement by Garba Shehu as unwarranted and views it as a misdirected attempt towards giving a dog a bad name to hang it.

“CAN’s position is that the killings of innocent lives, maiming, and destruction of lives and property across the nation, particularly the fresh attacks in the southern part of Kaduna State, have reached an extraordinary height and a matter of grave concern, hence, require that the FG takes a proactive approach instead of taking sides.”

The Kaduna State CAN chairman, however, called on the government to act promptly in apprehending those perpetrating violence in the area and the country at large before the affected communities are exterminated.
