Buhari orders military, others to patronise new garment firm

President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered the armed forces, police and other paramilitary outfits to patronised a Turkish fashion  company Sur Corporatewear.

The Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria on Thursday signed a $13m agreement with Sur Corporatewear for the manufacture of military and paramilitary clothing and accessories under the Public Private Partnership.

The Minister of Defence, Maj. Gen. Bashir Magashi, said at the signing ceremony in Abuja the firm would help revive  the country’s  textile industry through the development of cotton farms and cotton milling plants.

The company will begin operation in   2021.

Buhari said at a ceremony in Kaduna on Friday the idea of partnering  the  firm was to cement the relationship between Nigeria and Turkey.

The company, is expected to employ between 1,000 and 1,500 people in its first year of operation and later 5,000 direct jobs.

The President was represented by the Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, at the event.

Buhari  said, “There is therefore a  need to establish a modern garment factory to produce befitting uniform for our armed forces and other security agencies.

“I am delighted that part of the value chain of this industry is the creation of additional 1,000 workforce when the factory is fully operational from 2021.

“Since the basic raw materials for the factory is cotton, so, Kaduna, Bauchi, Gombe and Katsina states are expected to create additional opportunities through this value chain.”

He added, “I hereby direct that armed forces,  police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and other paramilitary and uniform agencies to procure their uniform and relevant accessories from this factory when it becomes operational.”
