Benue records first case of coronavirus

Benue state governor, Samuel Ortom, Saturday disclosed that one Susan Okpe who was discovered to have Coronavirus has been isolated at the Benue State University Teaching Hospital, Makurdi.

The governor said Okpe had returned from United Kingdom with seven other persons but one of them has tested negative.

He said after several tests, Susan Ogbe was confirmed to have contracted the disease, stressing that the others were being tested.

He said the doctor and staff of the hospital where the woman was admitted for some time have to be quarantined for necessary examination, emphasizing that the woman’s family members have to be also isolated and examined.

Governor Ortom said the markets would be shot down as from Monday, adding that people should stock stock food items.

He however said that shops that sell food items and other essential things that would be needed from time to time have to remain open.

Ortom said he would be making a state broadcast on Monday, adding that details of how movement of people into Benue through the six borders would be spelt out in due course.

Ortom called on the people to observe personal hygiene and restrict gathering at churches  and mosques.

He announced that after next Sunday, Church gathering would be outlawed. He said the mosques were allowed to hold Friday prayers and that as from next Friday, gathering in large numbers would not be allowed.

Ortom said those who came into contact with the lady should submit themselves for examination, stressing that such examination would save the state from further spread of the virus.

On what the deputy governor, Benson Abounu, should do since he had traveled out and mixed with people in the cities in recent times, Abounu said he had already isolated himself but the governor and the other people advised his status.
