Bayelsa guber: Ex-minister declares interest, woos voters

 Tony Olutomiwa, Yenagoa

A governorship aspirant on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), in Bayelsa State, Sen. Heineken Lokpobiri, at the weekend, said he was on a rescue mission ahead of the November governorship election in the state and as such urged the people to support his aspiration.

Lokpobiri, a former Speaker in the state and immediate past Minister of State for Agriculture, made this known while formally declaring his quest for governor at an event in Yenagoa, the state capital.

The event which held at his campaign office on Sani Abacha Expressway also coincided with the commissioning of the office.

He pointed out that the essence of government is the provision of security and welfare of the people but which he said the incumbent government in the state had failed to do and should be changed.

He said his party, the APC, which he praised to have done so well at the Federal level in recent years, has a manifesto that will provide for the security and welfare of the people,  including provision of food, education, health, housing, jobs and other essentials if life.

He said the state had no business with poverty and why he had decided to come home on a rescue mission in order to make these provisions available to the people in tandem with the slogan of  Bayelsa State which is “Glory of all lands” and called for support.

Lokpobiri said he was looking beyond the party primaries but focused on the actual election in November, stressing that he was sure to pick the APC governorship ticket in the state.

“Although campaign has not started but today I have only come to inform you that me,  your brother, your son, is running for governorship of Bayelsa under the APC. And I can assure you that by the grace of God and your support,  we will not only take the ticket but we are already preparing for general election”, he said.

Earlier, the special guest of honour at the occasion, Chief Audu Ogbe,  had eulogised Lokpobiri,  whom he described as a dedicated and worthy man who had the capacity “to truly rescue the state” by making essential things of life available.

He therefore called on the people to support his aspiration as a necessity.
