Bawa: Diezani’s alleged $12.5m Diamond Bra a creation of Social Media

Abdulrasheed Bawa, the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has revealed that a bra alleged to belong to former Minister of Petroleum, Diezani Allison-Maduekwe said to be worth over $12.5m is a creation of social media.

He revealed that Diezani had no such bra and that if such existed, as the lead investigator in the case, he would have known.

Bawa made this known on a TVC, Your View programme monitored by The Nigerian Xpress Newspaper.

“There was nothing like a diamond bra, it was just a creation of social media. As the lead investigator in that case, I can assure you that there is nothing of such. If there is something like that, I should know because I led the search” he stated.

Recall that a report had emerged that Diezani owned a bra called Heavenly Stars made by Victoria Secrets in 2001 which is said to be one of the most expensive bras in the world with 1,200 pink Sapphires and diamond at the centre of the bra; it’s reportedly worth $12.5m.

Bawa also revealed that the commission has recorded an unprecedented 1, 576 convictions from January to date.

“We have recorded an unprecedented 1, 576 convictions from January to till date while 122 were discharged and acquitted which represents less than 10 per cent loss rate” he added.

He also blamed social media for the amplification of cases involving officers of the commission barging into hotel rooms to arrest alleged fraudsters.

“We are in the social media age where a little issue can be amplified. It is not in our character, that is not what we are set out to do

From January till date, we have arrested about 2,000 alleged cybercriminals across the country and if we have about two per cent of those complaining about something, we need to be concerned about human rights and people’s privacy.

It is not part of our nature to be violent in nature, if you look at the provision of our establishment, financial crimes are non-violent financial crimes, it is financial crimes carried out by individuals, groups of individuals in an organized manner.

We are looking inward to see where we are wrong and we will correct them, we will admit, and apologize and move on.

I want to assure you that all the sting operations that we carry out, we do it professionally, within the ambit of the law, we are a law-abiding institution” he added.
