Attempted car theft: Court admits 32-year-old applicant to bail in sum of N200,000

A Wuse Zone II Chief Magistrates’ Court on Friday admitted a 32-year-old applicant, Ifeanyi Abaleke, who allegedly attempted to steal a Hilux van to bail in the sum of N200, 000.

Abaleke, who hails from Owerri, is charged with two counts of criminal conspiracy and attempt to steal.

Chief Magistrate Lateef Abolaji, admitted the defendant to bail, after he pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Abolaji ordered the defendant to produce one surety who must reside within the jurisdiction of the court.

He also ordered that the surety must submit an affidavit of means, his or her National ID or International passport with the court registrar.

The magistrate adjourned the case until April 1 for hearing.

Earlier, the Prosecutor, Mr. Bob Emmanuel, told the court that the case was reported sometime in December 2018, at the Criminal Investigation Department Abuja by one Gambia Ezra of opposite chief palace Mpape, Abuja.

He said that the defendant and two others at large, attempted to steal the vehicle from the First Bank Area 3 branch in Abuja, where the complainant had parked to withdraw money from the ATM Gallery.

Emmanuel said the defendant was caught in the act while his two accomplices ran away with a Toyota Corolla, belonging to another person.

He said the offence contravened the provisions of section 97 and 95 of the Penal Code. (NAN)
