Armed robbery suspects escape lynching during failed attempt to rob aged businesswoman

Two suspected members of a dreaded armed robbery gang narrowly escaped lynching in the Shagamu area of Ogun State when they were apprehended while attempting to rob an aged businesswoman and brutalised her shop.

The suspects, Joseph Uzor, 27, and Obadeyi Quadri, 27, who disguised as military personnel by wearing military camouflage, were arrested by operatives of the Ogun State Police Command.

It was learnt that the duo alongside two others at large attempted to flee the scene of the attack when they sighted military personnel that came to the place.

According to the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Abimbola Oyeyemi, the suspects narrowly escaped being lynched when they tried to flee the troubled scene.

Oyeyemi said the incident, which happened on September 22, was reported at the Sakura Police Division.

He said: “The report had it that had it that the four men clad in military camouflage alighted from a Sienna bus at Sabo Market, Shagamu, and caused pandemonium there. They beat up an elderly market woman and disrupted commercial activities in the market.

“While this was going on, a serving soldier arrived the scene and demanded for the identity of the suspects. Instead of identifying themselves, they started boarding commercial motorcycles to escape from the scene hence the distress call to the police.

“On the strength of the information, the Divisional Police Officer, Sakura Division, Dahunsi Ronald, a Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP), quickly led his patrol team to the scene where two of the suspects were arrested with the help of members of the public.

“The angry mob descended on them and attempted to hijack the suspects but they were quickly whisked away from the scene by the police.”

The PPRO said the suspects had two pairs of military camouflage, two pairs of black boots, one camouflage vest, one camouflage fez cap, one Samsung phone and a cash of N10,800.”

Speaking further, Oyeyemi said: “They are strongly suspected to be part of a robbery syndicate, who operate in military outfit along Shagamu Benin Expressway, some of who were recently apprehended.

“Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police (CP), Edward Awolowo Ajogun, has ordered the immediate transfer of the suspects to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for discreet investigation.”
