Razaq Bamidele

As scheduled rerun election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), comes up Saturday April 15 in Ogun State, the camp of the State House of Assembly Speaker, Rt. Hon. Olakunle Taiwo Oluomo, whose polling unit the election will take place are exuding confidence that the Speaker will come out victorious.

The affected Polling Unit 004 of Ifo 1 State constituency is where the Speaker will cast his vote. The election of the polling unit was cancelled on March 18 by the INEC over alleged over voting. The cancellation came while the speaker was confortably leading with 968 votes at the unit popularly referred to as ‘Front of Mosque 11’ (Iwaju Mosalasi Unit 11).

Checks revealed that, in the INEC record, 1,848 registered as eligible voters while about 1,596 collected their Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs) to vote. The rescheduled election will rekindle the rivalry between the two formidable political parties in the state-All Progressives Congress (APC) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). While the Speaker, Olakunle Oluomo will represent the APC, from Ifo Ward 3, Okikiola Ogundele will represent the PDP from Ifo Ward 1.

Our correspondent learnt that, the confidence from the Speaker’s camp was borne out of the established belief that all the five wards that make up the Ifo State Constituency 1, are the Speaker’s strong hold, hence his camp’s optimism that, “the Saturday rerun election would be a mere picnic because the game will be coming up at the political and electoral catchment area of Olakunle Taiwo Oluomo, the honourable Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly.”

Convener of a campaign group for the Speaker, Ifo Dynamic Youth for Oluomo’s Re-Election, Comrade Lawal Temitope, who spoke on behalf of his group enumerated series of qualities that would aid their principal’s victory on Saturday to include experience on the job, humility, acceptability and his popularity among the electorate in particular and the whole people of the state in general.

According to Temitope, the highly sophisticated and enlightened people of the constituency would not at this point in time discard an experienced candidate, who has been providing robust representation for the area in the House of Assembly for a green horn, who would go to the House to start learning the rudiments of law making, reasoning that, the chances of Oluomo retaining the speakership seat are very bright and should not be lost to another likely non-ranking legislator who cannot stand the slight chance of making it to the hot seat.

In addition, Temitope disclosed further that, Oluomo’s experience and legislative expertise which he brought to bear on the way and manner he has been handling the duties of the House that has made him succeed in bringing about cohesion among the generality of the law makers is another factor the people would consider in voting for him again en masse on Saturday, asserting that, “that qualities had cemented the cordial relationship between the executive and legislative arms of government of Ogun State and had also invariably given birth to rapid growth, economic progress and infrastructural development of the state.”

Mr. Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun would not want to lose such a formidably dependable ally like Olakunle Taiwo Oluomo in his government, Comrade Lawal Temitope summited with all authority at his disposal, reasoning that, a workaholic governor would like to have an equally goal getter in his government for the general interest of the good people of his state to make his job easy and convenient.
