Anambra: FRSC begins clampdown on vehicles without registered number plates from Oct. 2

The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Anambra State Command, on Friday said it would begin clampdown on vehicles, tricycles and motorcycles operating in the state without registered Number Plates with effect from October 2.

Mr Andrew Kumapayi, the Sector Commander in the state, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Awka that the enforcement date was shifted from August 1 to October 2 to ensure adequate sensitisation.

Kumapayi said the clampdown was aimed at curbing the growing rate of crimes and improve upon the existing National Drivers and Vehicles Database in the country.

“The initial date for the clampdown was supposed to take effect yesterday, Aug. 1, but the Joint Taskforce board had a meeting with the management of FRSC and decided to shift the date to Oct. 2.

“The reason is to enable the board to round up their awareness programme for the state government agencies, particularly the board of Inland Revenue, so they can key into the enforcement.

“The postponement will give ample time for the state government to make request for number plates from FRSC to ensure availability in the state to meet the demand.

“It will also allow for enough sensitisation of various stakeholders such as vehicle owners, tricycle operators and motorcycle owners so that they can comply with the registration before the deadline.

“It’s just two months grace after which enforcement will take effect,” he said.

Kumapayi said the FRSC law stipulated that all vehicles must be properly registered before plying the road, adding that the level of default had become so alarming that it would no longer be condoned. (NAN)
