Anambra Assembly summons Commissioner over employment irregularities

The Anambra State House of Assembly has called on the Commissioner for Basic Education, Prof. Kate Azuka Omenugha, to appear before it at plenary, on Thursday, February 3, 2022.

The lawmakers made the call after the member representing Aniocha II constituency Hon. Okechukwu Ejike moved a motion over the complaints and irregularities surrounding the conversion excess of Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) done by the Prof. Omenugha and her ministry, stating that the process should be suspended pending the conclusion of investigation of alleged non- compliance of the process.

Hon. Okechukwu Ejike, who is the committee chairman on Basic Education frowned at the development surrounding the teachers proposed to be employed stated that duo process was not followed.

In his submission, he emphasised that a lot of complaints had been made and if not corrected, it was capable of generating serious problem and anarchy in the state.

In his words, “Many people whose names were published did not attend the interview. I am calling on this honorable house to call on the commissioner to suspend every action as regards the documentations of the process”.

The legislators, in the separate submissions, lamented at the latest development surrounding the process of the teachers who are already teaching in public schools but are not on the payroll.

“The number of PTA teachers proposed to be employed was five hundred (500) but six hundred and twelve names were published (Addition of 112 names).

“There is no equity and fairness. Duo process has to be followed. Some patriotic citizens who have volunteered themselves, toiling for years have been short-changed when they are supposed to be rewarded for their charitable works.

“They have been collecting stipends and now that there is opportunity for them to absorbed into the main stream, they have been thrown away from the window. Where is patriotism?

“If we do not do anything about these, Ndi-Anambra will lose faith in the system we are operating.

Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Uche Okafor, while reacting, said that it was a worrying situation and that it was the primary responsibility of this institution as lawmakers to investigate this matter.
