Lai Mohammed chides FG’s critics, says ‘Nigeria never engages in religious freedom violation or have a policy of religious persecution

Lai Mohammed, Nigeria’s Minister of Information and Culture, has welcomed the decision of the United States of America to remove the country from its list of countries with religious freedom concerns.

The Federal Government’s reaction was contained in a statement issued by Lai Mohammed, on Thursday.
Lai Mohammed, in his statement, said America’s action was “fair and just”.

Recall that the United States of America had, on Wednesday, removed Nigeria from its list of religious violators.

America also blacklisted Russia, China, and eight others as countries of ‘particular concern’ for having engaged in or tolerated ‘systematic, ongoing, and egregious violations of religious freedom.’

The Minister also reiterated his earlier stance that Nigeria did not engage in religious freedom violation or have a policy of religious persecution.

He said Nigeria jealously protects religious freedom as enshrined in the country’s constitution and takes seriously any infringements in that regard.

“We will continue to ensure that every Nigerian has the freedom to practice his or her own chosen religion or belief without hindrance,” he said.

The Minister also commended religious leaders in the country who have been working to ensure religious harmony.
