The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Wahab Egbewole has implored Muslims and Christians in Nigeria to see joint observation of this year’s Ramadan and Lent as a divine lesson.
Speaking at an ‘iftar’ he hosted at the Vice Chancellor’s lodge of the institution, he said the co-incidence of the two religious obligations was a charge by Almighty God that people of the two faiths should jointly take a responsibility to guide the affairs of Nigeria along a peaceful co-existence.
The ‘iftar’ was designed to host journalists in the State, prominent friends of the University, Students Union leaders and officers of the institution cutting across religious divides.

According to him, the co-incidence of Ramadan and Lent this year was a divine call people should see themselves as one saying; “in Nigeria today, we need to be more Godly in our day-to day activities and indeed, be less religious”.
Talking about the uniqueness of his institution, Prof. Egbewole said; “the University of Ilorin is the only one that belongs to the “Elite Group” in Nigeria as well as belonging to the World Association of Universities, one of those that attended the World Conference of Universities recently at Qatar.
Speaking on the strike action by the non-academic unions across the country and its effect on the programmes of the University of Ilorin the Vice Chancellor said told his guests that the strike did not affect the school programme pointing out that for instance the present Semester Examinations were going on un-interrupted because out of four of such Unions in the institution, only two of them are partaking in the strike.
The Vice Chancellor who is one year in office said his team had been able to tremendously improve tremendously the physical infrastructures in the University saying for instance, they had increased the number of hostel accomodations to including the popular ‘Moremi Hall’ to ease the perennial shortage of the facility to students.
He appreciated the Federal Government patronage of his staff in the areas of appointment which he said was a testimony of the quality of the staff of the institution.
