With the inauguration of nine sub-committees to pilot the affairs of the Oloibiri- Run half-marathon event in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State capital, all seem to be ready for the takeoff of the long-awaited marathon at the end of this year.

Also, the Bayelsa State government has indicated interest be part of the historic event.

The event, according to the organisers, is aimed at bringing the hitherto forgotten famous Oloibiri oil well where oil was first struck in commercial quantity in Nigeria, to the fore of national consciousness.

Additionally, it is aimed to reinvent, promote and preserve for posterity the Oloibiri historical heritage, which is a national historic site that has for too long been abandoned, neglected and seemingly forgotten.

The nine sub-committees inaugurated include Economic and Administration, General Management, Media and Publicity, Marketing /Contact, Technical, Hospitality and Protocol, Medical Services, Security and Community Liaison.

The inauguration event was chaired by the Bayelsa State Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Dr Baralatei Igali, who described it as epoch-making and expressed the government’s preparedness to be a partner.

Igali, represented by Aye MightyMan Dikuro, Permanent Secretary of the Sports Ministry, stressed the need for corporate organisations to sponsor sports activities in Nigeria.

The event, he further noted, would resurrect and showcase Oloibiri, known for its oil activities to the world map.

“The event will be resurrecting Oloibiri to the world map. Oloibiri represents oil,” noted the sports commissioner,  adding that the concept of an oil museum is as old as the military regimes in Nigeria.

“It is a good thing to associate with this epoch-making event. It is overdue for corporate organisations to sponsor sports in Nigeria,” Igali added, assuring that government would ensure the success of the event and make it a full marathon event subsequently.

In his remarks, Eyinimi Omorozi, Chief Executive Officer, Mahogany 21st Century Concepts Ltd., organisers of the marathon, said the event, which has been on the drawing board for over one year, is aimed at creating positive perception for Bayelsa State to enable investors to discover the abundant potentials available in the state.

According to Omorozi, there is no way to showcase the state other than what is available in it.

So, the event is being put together “to use it to reinvent Oloibiri oil well one. We must reinvent for posterity; it is our own strategic way,” he added.

The highlight of activities of the two-day Oloibiri-Run Yenagoa half-marathon event, which is likely to come up by the end of this year would include: Oloibiri -Run 21km half-marathon and 5km demonstration road race; Oloibiri-Run boat regatta at the Ox-Bow Lake, Yenagoa; Oloibiri -Run pictorial oil and gas, arts and crafts exhibition; Oloibiri -Run special cultural evening for entertainment and presentation of prizes to individual male and female winners in the main 21km half-marathon and the 5km demonstration race.
