Akwa Ibom: Former gov invades collation centre, as group raises alarm over looming violence

ANTHONY IWUOMA

A former governor of Akwa Ibom has allegedly invaded the Essien Udim Local Government Area centre where votes of the state governorship and House of Assembly elections results are being collated.

Officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, alleged that the former governor, who allegedly stormed the centre with a busload of election materials, wants to compel them to falsify the results.
The INEC officials have, however, reportedly called in security men to avert impending breakdown of law and order at the collation centre, as tension is already building up.

Meanwhile, Akwa Ibom Liberation Movement, a pressure group, has raised the alarm over likely post-election violence in the state.

According to the leader of the group, Prince Emmanuel Sam, who spoke in a media briefing in Uyo on Saturday evening, there were intelligence reports that agents of some political party were planning to provoke violence.

He said: “The Governorship and State Assembly elections have been so peaceful in the state, except some few spots where there are crises.

“In the whole, we can conclude that elections in Akwa Ibom State have been peaceful. We commend the security agents for providing necessary protection for citizens of the state to cast their votes.”

He alleged that a leading opposition party in the state “in connivance with some security agents, have moved into various local government collation centres across the state to disrupt collation of results from all the units and wards.

“Let it be known to security agents currently in Akwa Ibom State, that the people have spoken through their votes, as such, they should not assist individual or group of individuals to subvert the will of the masses,” he warned.
