AFCON 2019: Appiah, Black Stars manager throws weight behind VAR

From George Aluo, Cairo

Black Stars manager, Kwesi Appiah has thrown his weight behind CAF’s decision to introduce Video Assistant Referees (VAR) in the on going AFCON 2019.

CAF had before the start of the tournament said VAR would be used from the quarter final stage.

Appiah who spoke after Ghana’s painful defeat to Tunisia Monday night in Ismailia said VAR would help African football.

He pointed out that the first half goal his side scored in the game against Tunisia that was disallowed by the South African referee would have stood if VAR was used in the round of 16 tie.

“I think VAR will help African football. If there was VAR, our goal would have stood,” Appiah said.

Continuing the coach stated: “We had the chances and we could have finished it in normal time. We have to comfort the players. What you have to do is to make use of what you have learnt in the competition. Actually I feel bad after the loss. It was a very tough game and expectations on us were high. We did our best but when it comes to penalties, it can go either way.”

Tunisia manager, Alain Giresse on his part said his team needs to remain focused until the very last minute of every game if they must not be punished.

“We have been reminded by what happened against Ghana that we have to be concentrated during the entire 90 minutes. It was a difficult game but my players responded well to the difficulty.”
