4 dismissed military personnel, 3 others arrested for armed robbery

Four dismissed military personnel and three others, impersonating military personnel, have been arrested by the Lagos State Police Command.

The suspects, who were arrested with 12 military camouflage and three female underwear, had reportedly snatched a black Lexus car with Registration Number RX 330 at gunpoint around Ijegun area of the state.

The suspects, Ndidi Oluchukwu, 30, Owolabi Adeyemo, 42, David Olufemi, 47, Iseyin Samuel Isreal, 41, Emeka Ibeh, 29, Samuel Anochime, 36, Ebedot Stephen, 27,  were paraded by the Commissioner of Police, CP Zubairu Muazu, at the Police Officers’ Mess, in Ikeja, on Monday.

One of the suspects, Oluchukwu, told journalists how he was arrested.

According to him, “ The pants were found in my house and they belonged to my wife. I am a dismissed Army Sergeant.

“I was dismissed in 2015. I took a pass and had traveled to my home town. I got ill and before I came back, I discovered I have been dismissed.

“I did not return the military uniform on my dismissal. I had to start doing escort services for vehicle owners. I was paid N3,500 per trip.”

Similarly, Olufemi, a dismissed Corporal of the Nigerian Army, said he was dismissed for his alleged involvement in land-grabbing.

Speaking further on their arrest of the suspects, CP Muazu said members of the robbery gang were arrested at Ijegun, Baruwa Estate, Ipaja, Iyana-Paja, Ishashi and Ikotun areas of Lagos.

In the words of the police boss, “ The Command has received a lot of distress calls from the residence of IJegun and environs about the activities of some armed robbers who operate in military uniforms. One of such incidents happened on February 18, 2019, at 4:35 p.m., where a Commuter who was travelling to Ibadan from Nijmegen was accosted by the said armed robbers, dispossessed him of his Lexus car at gunpoint.

“It is on the strength of those complaints that we tasked our Special Anti-Robbery Squad Operatives to identify the gang and apprehend them.

“Members of the robbery gang were arrested at Ijegun, Baruwa Estate, Ipaja, Iyana-Paja, Ishashi and Ikotun areas of Lagos. Investigation revealed that the suspects are dismissed, soldiers.

“Items recovered from them include twelve pairs of military camouflage uniforms, two cutlasses, ATM cards, military ID cards, jackknives, a female pant and a local ring. “The suspects confessed to be responsible for a series of robberies within Ijegun and its environs. The suspects will be charged to Court,” CP Muazu said.
