3-storey building collapses in Ebonyi

…Govt. orders probe

Tragedy struck, in Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State capital, on Wednesday, when a 3-storey building, located opposite Abakaliki Local Government Council Headquarters, Nkaliki, collapsed in the day.

Investigations revealed that the building,  before the ugly incident, was still under construction.

However, no life was lost in the incident .

Addressing newsmen on the scene of the incident, Chairman of Abakaliki Capital Territory Development Board, Dr. Uche Onwe, expressed disappointment over the collapse of the building, and warned that all those whose negligence lead to the incident would be prosecuted.

He alleged that the building collapsed because necessary building protocols and procedures were compromised during the construction work.

According to him, “we are here to ensure immediate evacuation of the debris of the building.

“The immediate evacuation of the debris of the building, among others brought us to the site. We thank God that there are no other building was close to it.

“We are disappointed at this Development. The builders, Engineers and others compromised standard.

“It is an old building which was still ongoing before we come board. We will get to the root of this matter.

“Many stakeholders are here at the site and all those involved will be arrested and prosecuted.”

Reacting to the development, the state’s Commissioner for Internal Security and Border Peace, Mr. Stanley Emegha and the Special Assistant to Governor Dave Umahi on Abakaliki Capital Territory, Mrs. Chinyelu Udoku, said that the state government would unravel the persons or agencies that issued approval to the construction of the structure.
