Sam Munkley, the World Para Powerlifting Competition Director on Wednesday rated Nigeria high for the hosting of the ongoing 2019 Lagos World Para Powerlifting (WPP) Invitational Championships.

Munkley told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) at the venue of the championships that the organisation of the competition was well executed by the host.

“I am thrilled and happy, I think Nigeria has over achieved and exeeded my expectation as far as this competition is concerned.

It has been a difficult journey to get here, there were some challenges along the way but the end product is very positive.

Nigeria is the leading house when we talk about performance in powerlifting but we want to develop Nigeria as a host and this is step one,” he said.

He added that the country had what it takes to stage a world class tournament in the sport if given the opportunity.

“I have great faith in Nigeria as a future host for even larger scale competitions because I believe there is also room for improvement,” he said.

The director, however, restated the world body’s support for the development of the sport in Africa.

The country has so far won 19 gold, 13 silver and eight bronze medals at the ongoing championships.

Athletes participating in the championships are competing in 10 male and 10 female categories, while a total of 60 medals are up for grabs.

NAN also reports that the IPC sanctioned event is being supported by the Federal Ministry Sports and Youth Development, Lagos State Government, Peak Milk, Total, Heritage Bank and other private bodies. (NAN)
